What is a consultation?
A consultation is a formal process where the government gathers public and industry opinions before making policy decisions.
This is your opportunity to ensure that AI regulations protect songwriters, composers and all music creators.
What’s being proposed?
An important proposal in this consultation is a change to copyright law that would introduce a “text and data mining (TDM) exception.”
TDM is a technique used by AI companies to scan and analyse online content. AI models use this data to learn, create and generate new content
What does this mean for music creators?
Under current UK law, AI companies must obtain a license if they want to use copyrighted works for commercial text and data mining.
However, the proposed changes could remove this requirement—potentially allowing AI companies to scrape and use your music, lyrics and compositions without permission or paying royalties or license fees.
How to Respond to the Consultation?
1. Go to the consultation page
The consultation page can be found here.
2. Use our guide with suggested responses
Our guide will help you submit your views. It includes key points you may want to make, along with your thoughts, experiences and opinions. You don’t need to be an expert on AI or copyright to respond. Find it via the link in our bio.
3. Submit your response before the deadline
Send your response by 11:59 pm on Tuesday 25th February 2025.
Spread the Word
The more voices we unite, the stronger our message becomes. Share this with songwriters, composers and anyone who cares about the future of music.
Post it on your stories, send it to your group chats, and make sure as many people as possible see it.
Every response counts.
