Tom Gray re-elected as Chair of The Ivors Academy, “There is unfinished business.”

Tom Gray has been re-elected as Chair of The Ivors Academy Board. Tom brings a wealth of experience and passion to the role, to which he was first elected in 2022.

Tom Gray

A founding member of the Mercury Prize-winning band Gomez, Tom’s campaigning has challenged inequities in the music industry and amplified the voices of music creators around the world. Instrumental in campaign-building, Tom’s leadership has brought about notable movement in both parliament and within the music industry itself.

“There is a reason we produce much of the best music in the world. The UK has been investing in it for generations through the BBC, music sales, education and arts funding, Yet, whether it’s creator income, tax revenue to our treasury or investment in our communities, UK taxpayers are seeing far too little return. Global corporations continue to be the major recipients of all our shared effort,” commented Tom Gray.

“I know why I have been bestowed the great honour of being our Chair. There is unfinished business. We need to see real change for songwriters and composers. Our craft is under sincere threat. AI is upon us and our industry hasn’t got its own house in order. I will keep driving government and industry to realise the extent of the crisis we’re in.”

Tom’s re-election saw him elected to the Academy’s Senate by the membership, elected to the Board by the Senate, and, finally, elected Chair by the Board. Under his leadership, the Academy has significantly strengthened its advocacy position: working for fairer conditions and greater recognition for music creators, while continuing to celebrate outstanding creative achievements through its prestigious Ivor Novello Awards.

The Ivors Academy CEO, Roberto Neri, added, “Tom’s leadership has been instrumental in pushing the Academy’s mission forward. His unwavering commitment to championing the rights of music creators makes him an exceptional Chair and we are excited about the journey ahead under his guidance.”

Tom’s re-election concludes The Ivors Academy’s current election cycle, which has included the election of a new Senate to represent members’ interests and Board to shape the Academy’s strategic direction. Among the newly elected members are Paloma Faith, David Arnold, Tinie Tempah, Kamille and Dru Masters.

Members of the Senate lead Councils across the British Isles—Wales, Scotland and All-Ireland—that also represent key groups within the Academy, including songwriters, classical composers, media composers, jazz composers and early-career creators. This structure aims to support and represent all members within the Academy.
