In 2025, The Ivors Academy secured a landmark commitment from major UK record labels to introduce per diems – daily expense payments – and cover pre-agreed travel and accommodation costs for songwriters attending their writing sessions.
This has been agreed by the UK labels of Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Group.
This helps recognise the value of songwriters’ time and remove financial barriers to participation.
The per diem is £75 per day, regardless of session length. It is non-recoupable from featured artists and separate from any other pre-agreed expenses.
Per diems apply to sessions organised by Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group UK labels from July 2025, and to sessions organised by Sony Music Group UK labels from October 2025.
You can claim a per diem plus expenses if:
The Ivors Academy has a standardised per diem form to support claims. Using the form means that all required information is captured from the start and avoids delays.
Payment, eligibility and label-specific terms are set by each major label group:
The Ivors Academy processes per diem payments for Sony Music Group UK labels and The Sony Music Songwriter Support Fund.
Songwriters and composers aged 18 or over can join The Ivors Academy for free as Discovery members, which includes free access to the form. If you are not a member, you will be prompted to join when you submit your claim.
For questions about payment or label terms, contact your record company representative or the person who invited you to the session.

Other labels may offer different arrangements and you should ask the record company representative or the person who invited you to the session what support they offer and how to access it.
Per diem payments from Universal Music Group UK labels, Warner Music Group UK labels and the Sony Music Songwriter Support Fund are non-recoupable from featured artists.
This means the payment will not be deducted from future royalties.
Independent labels may apply different terms.
