MEPs back Copyright Directive by large majority

We, the music creators of the UK, send a message of thanks and celebration for the European Copyright Directive that was voted in by the European Parliament today.

We put creators at the forefront of the campaign to get this legislation approved. Creators need their rights and livelihoods protected and while not perfect, the Copyright Directive shares responsibilities and allows innovation to flourish. Creators are fundamental to the future digital economy and this legislation helps safeguard the livelihoods of future generations of composers and songwriters.

The Ivors Academy played an important role and we thank all our members for standing up and raising their voice. This is what we can achieve when we come together. We are a collective of individuals that invest in our community. Our opponents are commonly companies, with almost limitless resources who seek to drive profits, whatever the cost to the creative economy, or the cost to democracy.

There has never been a more important time for creators to stand up for their rights. We encourage all composers and songwriters, and those who believe in music creators to join the Ivors Academy. When we speak with one voice, we are powerful.
