Don Black, Chairman of the British Academy of Composers, Songwriters and Authors, says:

I am delighted to welcome you to the 1989 BASCA Gold Badge Awards. Since 1974 BASCA has honoured a handful of treasured friends each year: friends who have promoted British Songwriters by singing and playing their songs, promoting their catalogues or perhaps looking after their copyright interests. These are the people so essential to the Songwriters’ profession, but often overlooked when the glittering prizes are awarded.

Since the demise of Denmark Street as the centre of the music industry, the business has become so spread out that it is possible not to come across friends for years. That is the main reason why I regard today’s lunch as the best of the year. A chance to welcome new friends and a great opportunity to meet again some of the wonderful characters who helped shape our magnificent industry.”
