Ivor Novello's Life and Legacy
Ivor Novello was a composer, playwright and actor whose work left an indelible mark on British music and theatre. Born on 15 January 1893 in Cardiff as David Ivor Davies, he became one of the 20th century’s most celebrated songwriters.
His rise to fame began during the First World War with Keep the Home Fires Burning—an anthem that became a lasting symbol of hope and resilience. In 1927, he adopted the name Ivor Novello, marking a new chapter in an already remarkable career.
Throughout his career, Novello composed over 230 songs, many performed in his beloved West End musicals. Productions like Glamorous Night (1935) and The Dancing Years (1939) captivated audiences with their blend of romance and escapism.
During the Second World War, he was one of the few composers to continue writing and touring, bringing hope to a war-weary public. His song We'll Gather Lilacs became a symbol of comfort, just as Keep the Home Fires Burning had during the previous war.
Novello and The Ivors Academy
Ivor Novello’s contributions extended beyond his compositions. As one of our founding members, he was dedicated to protecting the rights of songwriters and building a community for creators.
In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, the Ivor Novello Awards were established in 1956, five years after his passing. The inaugural ceremony took place at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane—a fitting tribute, as Novello had saved the theatre from financial ruin with Glamorous Night.
The awards were created to honour excellence in songwriting and composition, to continue Novello’s legacy.
The Ivor Novello statuette, designed by Hazel Underwood, depicts Euterpe, the Greek muse of music and lyric poetry, and is now one of the world’s most coveted music honours.
